Ball hockey in Bermuda started in the 1980’s by a loosely-knit
group of die-hard Canadian hockey fans. Over the years guys would get together
Saturday mornings to play ‘pick-up’ hockey at an old converted outdoor roller-skating rink.
The number of players on the Island had grown and in the late 1990’s the
Bermuda Ball Hockey Association (BBHA) was officially formed. It was around that
time that the first semi-annual ball hockey tournaments were organized in Bermuda,
called the prestigious Robin Hood Cup. As the competition for the RHC tournaments grew,
so did the level of competitiveness.
In 1999, Bermuda sent its first ever International
Team to the USA to play a local ‘All-star” ball hockey select team from Leominster,
Massacuschetts. Due to a strong showing by Team Bermuda and the contacts made at that
very first International event, the BBHA was contacted by the International Street and
Ball Hockey Federation and was given a formal invitation to attend the 2001 World Ball
Hockey Championships being held the following year in Toronto. Team Bermuda finished 5th
in that 2001 World Championship event and has now been a formal member of the ISBHF for 7-years.
Since 2001, Bermuda has also participated 2003, 2005 and 2007 World Championships, the 2002 European
Cup and Bermuda is the three-time defending champion of the Caribbean Cup in 2004, 2005 and 2008.
